I was talking to a friend from my summer school today, and he discussed with me about how mass in an object increases when somethings is going at a speed.  I gave an example to him saying that if I bumped into a tree I wouldn't fly back, because there's no serious amount of weight, but if the tree were to come flying at me I would fly backwards.  Can you talk more about this?  What are your thoughts or theories?

When you bounce into a tree, it's still recieving the energy, but it's resisting it because it has more mass and it's firmly planted into the ground.

It was more of a mini tree, if it came at me slowly and hit me, I wouldn't feel as much mass against me compared to if it came at me at the speed of a jet!

The increase of Mass with speed is part Einstein's theory of relativity. That is why you cannot go at the speed of light. If you did, you would have infinite mass. Also, at relativistic speeds, time and speed are relative. If you go near the speed of light, time actually slows down for you.
